Artist Statement

Ordinary objects contain a wealth of both symbolic and physical potential. By showcasing their natural and cultural backgrounds, I have begun to appreciate their value. For example, my work with salt draws from the history of things like being payment for Roman soldiers, or the cultural superstition of throwing salt over your shoulder. Such simple ideas that are often overlooked can deeply impact our idea of such a common material. Through installations, performances, sculptures, and more, I explore the materials’ properties and create connections between their tangible and invisible qualities. Most of my materials come from humble beginnings, giving a greater wealth of possibilities they can become. Salt, for example, comes straight from the earth. I cannot think of a more humble beginning, while it still has so much power when we look at its history and present uses in our society. Drawing from materials like this that fascinate me from past experiences and memories, I give them new life in the fine-art context. This new context, being seen as art rather than just an object, elevates it in our minds and gives us more to think about when we reencounter these materials in our daily lives. These mundane materials are then elevated by recognition of their place in the world.
